![]() ![]() He went over his notes while playing Silent Hill 2 and realized they were the exact same notes he had before he took the time off. I remember an interview with former Silent Hill producer Tomm Hulett who stated that he had to playtest Silent Hill HD Collection while his wife was in the hospital because Konami was flipping out over the bad press the game was getting. Fri 24th Feb sometimes it is a case that the publisher does not care.Emulation was likely just a much faster thing for Nintendo Europe R&D (NERD) to do, as they're already emulation specialists and are responsible for the likes of Virtual Console, Nintendo Switch Online, NES and SNES Mini classic consoles, etc. I mention this as Nintendo would surely have the source to these games, but they opted for emulation rather than native recompiles. Super Mario Sunshine notoriously had a number of performance and graphical issues that Dolphin Emulator historically also experienced and overcame, such as the map screen transition effect being slow, the visibility of dev-cubes in certain platforming challenge levels, incorrect underwater filtering only applied to the original 4:3 area of a game modified to run 16:9, etc. This is probably because of how they chose to handle IR pointer controls, similarly to Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, Skyward Sword, etc. It's a weird case where they largely use emulation, though Super Mario Galaxy apparently uses re-compiled program in combination of emulation for the visuals. Fri 24th Feb is one recent notable exception to Nintendo's quality of porting Super Mario 3D All-Stars.Which while not lazy (making an emulator is not easy), it is for sure the cheap way out that puts the blame on the developers who are given close to no support by the publishers to do it properly the first time. I think that is the better way of doing things, but, it is far cheaper to just plug the ROM/ISO into an emulator and just call it a day. They're expensive to do a decompile and rebuilt port! As you have to now decompile the original game, figure out how the code worked and try to replicate that perfectly! It is very intensive work requiring teams that have knowledge in the subject. That is also why we see so many re-releases running on a modified emulator rather than a true built from the ground-up remaster like the Kingdom Hearts 1 remaster. Similar situation here where the Tales of Symphonia Remaster is based on the PS3 remaster for the PS2 version of the game. The Final Fantasy VII re-releases is a perfect example as it is based on the work done for the PC version in the 1990s by Eidos. ![]() The loss of the original assets, source code has made a lot of publishers reliant on work they did 10 years ago (in some case longer) to re-release games today. Nintendo remasters even the "lazy ones" are of just a different quality level than their competitors (Prime Remaster, Return to Dreamland, Skyward Sword, you name one and they are still very competently done if not exceptional). We can complain about Nintendo (and there is a lot to complain about), but their meticulous practice of backing up everything is insane! Companies like Square Enix, Capcom, Sega, Namco and Konami never saw the benefit of archiving their work to that level and it is noticeable in their remasters.
